Nelson McIntyre student shines at national youth leadership forum
Zenovia Kapty, a student at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, recently returned from an unforgettable experience at the Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa — a national program that brings together youth from across the country to explore government, public policy, and civic engagement.
Zenovia was nominated by a teacher and applied by writing about her passions and how she hoped to contribute to the forum. Her application focused on the mental health crisis, one of several issues she cares deeply about, alongside climate change and gender equity.
The week-long program exceeded her expectations.
“It was absolutely incredible,” she said. “Everyone was so passionate and welcoming. It was such a positive environment — no judgment, no drama, just people who really care.”
Throughout the week, Zenovia participated in simulations that mirrored real-life government processes, including forming political parties, running campaigns, and debating policy. She also took part in a mock federal budget process, advocating for funding in the social services sector. She also was able to hear from government leaders.
Zenovia said the experience helped her grow in confidence and gave her a broader perspective on life in different parts of Canada. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself,” she said. “It made me a happier person.”
A big congratulations to Zenovia for all her work, striving to learn to make this country a better place for all. Her leadership, curiosity, and commitment to making a difference are truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud to have her representing the division on a national stage — and doing so with such passion!
