Mark it Read: Advancing Literacy Together in ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥
October 8 is International Dyslexia Awareness Day, and October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Across Canada, communities are shining a light on every child's right to learn to read. In the ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ (ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥), this belief continues to guide our literacy journey.
Over the past four years, ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ has been developing and refining a system of universal early screening and progress monitoring for reading from Kindergarten to Grade 8. By using evidence-based tools, teachers in both English and French Immersion programming can now identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties — including dyslexia — earlier in their learning.
Screening takes place at key points throughout the school year, allowing teachers to respond with timely support before challenges become harder to address. Educators continue to strengthen their practice by providing explicit, systematic instruction in foundational literacy skills and by using screening data to inform their next steps.

Earlier this year, the Government of Manitoba announced that universal literacy screening would be required for all K–4 students up to twice per year. ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ welcomes this decision, as it reinforces the important work already underway in our division. Progress in this area has been made possible through strong partnerships with researchers, experts in the field, and a continued commitment to evidence-based practice.
As Manitoba prepares for the release of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission's Right to Read Report at the end of October, we are reminded that reading is more than a skill — it is a human right. Literacy gives students the independence to access information, express their ideas, and fully participate in learning and in life. By expanding early screening, strengthening instruction, and deepening collaboration with families, ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ is continuing its journey toward classrooms where all students have the opportunity to thrive.
Together, we — and keep moving toward a future where every learner has meaningful access to the power of literacy.
