Diwali, or Deepavali, is a major festival in Hinduism, and it is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists — each with their own historical and spiritual significance. Celebrations include lighting diyas (oil lamps) and candles, decorating homes with rangoli (colorful patterns), exchanging sweets and gifts, wearing new clothes, and enjoying fireworks. It is also a time for prayer, reflection, and new beginnings, often coinciding with the Hindu New Year in many regions.

In 2025, Diwali will be celebrated on Monday, October 20, with the five-day festival running approximately from October 18 to October 22.

Celebrate Diwali Safely: The City of Winnipeg reminds residents that a permit is required to set off fireworks within city limits.

No permit is needed for hand-held sparklers.

Fireworks permit requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid legal identification (e.g., Birth Certificate or Driver’s License with current address) is required.
  • Have written consent of the property owner.

Apply for a permit online and review all requirements at:
