École St. Germain students perform at Earth Day Celebration

On April 22, students from the École St. Germain choir and environment club had the honour of being invited by The Honourable Mike Moyes, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change to sing for the Earth Day Celebration event at the Manitoba Legislative Building.  They performed about nature and how to care for it with Mme Jennifer Engbrecht and Emily Thoroski, . It was wonderful to have Emily Thoroski come to this event and accompany the students’ singing.

Students were thrilled to have this opportunity.  Each speaker spoke eloquently about the environment, and each took the time to address the students for all they do for our earth.

The Honourable Mike Moyes shared this important message about the students, and all students who work to improve our planet:

"Children are not just the future stewards of our planet—they are the inspiration and energy we need today to protect it. When we teach them to care for the Earth, we plant seeds of hope that grow into action. We don’t just ask—we empower the youth of today to lead us forward in the fight against climate change, pursuit of clean energy, and protecting nature.”

Several students shared what this amazing opportunity to share their nature songs meant to them:

“Going to the Legislative building meant so much to me.  Just seeing all those people that care about the environment was so awesome. I would love to go again to say how much I love and try to help the environment.  All those little voices deserve to be heard.   Keep on calling.” – Aurélia

“To be at [the Leg] (the Earth Day celebration) means so much to me.  Knowing that we’re making a difference, but speaking means so much more:  that we are doing something, every word we say.  It is very meaningful to me, to know that change is already happening.” – Rebecca M.

“To me, it made me feel that we could make a difference, and the sounds were so cool.  I loved it.   I want to do it again.” – Brielle

“Singing at the Legislative building was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.  But it wasn’t the singing:  it was all the nature things like speeches about the environment.” – Nova

Emily Thoroski, The Environmental Musician, also shared what this meant:

“Collaborating with the students and Mme Jennifer at St. Germain elementary school has been a dream come true for me.  It’s been wonderful working with them to create environmental songs.  Seeing how passionate and dedicated the students are to the environment and climate change brings me so much hope. I truly believe our future is in good hands with the students at the Manitoba Legislative Building to celebrate Earth Day 2025, as well as at their concert for parents, was very special and so much fun!   Keep up the great work, École St. Germain!  Excited to come back and work with you again!”
