Strategic Action 4.5: UN Goals & Indigenous Rights

Involve the whole school in learning and teaching about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Rooted in Respect & Experience

We have launched an Indigenous Land-Based Education Course at Windsor Park Collegiate, rooted in the framework of UNDRIP. This work is supported by a divisional SharePoint page with resources for educators and experiential land-based programming for middle years students.

Local Action, Global Goals

Our schools are actively engaged with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals through participation in International Development Week, school-level recycling and food security initiatives, and the "GO FOR THE GOALS" challenge, where a Nordale student won a provincial contest.

  • Continue to build and maintain divisional SharePoint page with robust collection of UNDRIP-related and land-based facilitator resources
  • Expand dialogue with learning communities on how to implement land-based and experiential learning tied to UNDRIP principles
  • Work toward shared understanding and application of reconciliation in daily operations and long-term planning

United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals

  • Strengthen and clarify connections between land-based learning and lens of Global Goals; for example, goals 4, 11, 12, 13 14 and 15 are connected to land-based learning, but these connections could be made explicit and strengthened
  • Ask schools to complete survey of current activities/programs connected to goals 12, 13, 14 and 15, including all local recycling efforts, school level land based learning, and ways we are teaching children about life on land, and life in the water
  • Bring together high-school student leaders who are doing work of Global Goals in their schools to share ideas for ½ day, with goal being clearer shared understanding of goals, and ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ work that is ongoing
  • Conduct "Voluntary Local Review of Progress" to understand more fully ways that ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ works to achieve Global Goals, following guidelines from United Nations
